Accessibility

If you have trouble using this website or need information in another format, please let us know.

Using this website

The website uses a responsive layout, text that can be enlarged through your browser, clear headings and links and controls that can be used with a keyboard. A “Skip to content” link is available at the start of each page for keyboard users.

On smaller screens, the Menu button opens the main navigation. On the support page, the common questions can be opened and closed using a keyboard. Motion is reduced when your device requests reduced motion.

The content is in English. Decorative illustrations and icons are skipped by screen readers; the information is available in the text.

Light and dark mode

Use the Theme control at the top of any page to choose Light, Dark or Device. Device follows the colour setting on your phone or computer. Light and Dark override that setting for this website.

We remember a choice of Light or Dark for the current tab’s browser session. Choosing Device removes that choice immediately. Some browsers restore session information when you reopen a tab. If your browser blocks storage, you can still change the theme for the page you are reading. Read about colour preference storage.

Leaving the site quickly

The Quick exit link at the top of every page opens BBC Weather in the same tab. You can also press the Shift key three times within five seconds when you are not typing or using the Theme control. Escape closes the menu without leaving the site.

With JavaScript enabled, the page is covered immediately while the other website loads. The link still works without JavaScript, but the keyboard shortcut and immediate covering do not.

Quick exit does not erase your browsing history, remove earlier visits or downloads, close other tabs, or hide activity from someone monitoring your device or connection. It does not sign you out of the hosting service. Use a device you trust if you are concerned about monitoring.

The navigation and Quick exit remain available as you scroll. A second quick exit link appears near the start of the keyboard tab order.

Accessibility checks

Our target is Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA.

This website was checked on using automated accessibility checks and browser checks of keyboard navigation, visible focus, text enlargement, reflow on narrow screens and increased text spacing.

These checks cover our content pages and navigation. They do not assess the hosting provider’s sign in screens or websites we link to. Automated checks cannot establish complete accessibility: an independent audit and testing with screen reader users have not yet been completed.

Communication and formats

If you would find a different format or communication approach helpful, email us with what you need. We can discuss what is possible.

Examples of preferences you can raise include shorter written explanations, more time to respond or involving a trusted supporter. Please tell us what would help; you do not need to send a diagnosis or medical evidence in a first message.

If you cannot email us yourself, a trusted person can make an initial enquiry on your behalf. Phone or video support is arranged individually after contact.

You can also tell us about communication needs when making a support enquiry or expressing an interest in volunteering.
